I Swear, Officer, We Were Just On Our Way Home From Bible School...

Savannah was so excited to go back to AWANA tonight. We dropped her off, then I went to the market with Scarlett. Afterward, I left Scarlett at home with Jon and went to pick up Savy by myself. She asked to go get ice cream on the way home (a tradition Jon started last year), so we went to Sonic for an oreo blast. Then we headed home.

I had just turned onto Hwy 194 when I thought I saw blue lights behind me. They stopped almost immediately, so I didn't really think anything of it...probably just saw a reflection from a traffic stop somewhere. I made it a little farther down the road (where there are no street lights and it's absolutely pitch black), and it happened again - this time there was no doubt there was a cop behind me. Again, they stopped. My windows are tinted pretty dark, and I didn't see anything behind me. I looked to make sure I wasn't speeding (anyone who lives here knows that you'll get stopped for anything more than 5 miles over), but I wasn't even close to going over. Again with the lights...on then off. At this point, I thought maybe he just wanted to get around me, so I slowed down. No car passed, but he hit the lights again. I had no idea why I was getting pulled over, but I was passing the golf course, so I pulled over at the entrance. It was really dark, and I still couldn't see anything, and no one was walking up to the window...maybe Omar was back there and just messing with me. I'm waiting, and then AGAIN with the lights.....

Savy's new Sketchers Twinkle Toes - I can't believe I got pulled over by a pair of shoes!!!

So, today I was standing in the local liquor store all depressed because I didn't get carded for the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc I was purchasing. Five years ago (at age 30) I would have most certainly been asked for my ID if purchasing alcohol - or even trying to get into a casino for that matter - but not today. So (while I was waiting for my change) I was sulking about how I'll probably start finding gray hair any day and I should probably decide right now if I'm going to color my hair or not and also thinking about switching to the anti-wrinkle products from Paula's Choice when my phone rang. It was my long lost BFF Dawn!

A little history...Dawn was like the sister I never had in high school...loved, loved, loved her to death and spent more time at her house than my own. Then she just up and disappeared...well, there's a little more to it than that, but I won't go into details. Anyway, she was gone - just like that - and I missed her TERRIBLY! I have wondered for years what happened and how she's been and all that stuff. She finally got on Facebook not too long ago, and we sent a few messages back and forth. And today she called me and we talked for an hour and it was so awesome to hear her voice! I can't even put it into words...it's like I've just been waiting all these years to talk to her again, and now that I have, everything feels better....does that make any sense? We are going to get together soon asap....how great is that?

The weather was beautiful today! Scarlett got her first ride in the jogging stroller.

We bought this around the time Savy was born, and we have used the heck out of it. I really wish we had a double jog stroller now. Scarlett LOVED the walk, and it was a looooong one. It reminded me of when Savy was just a baby, and I'd put her in this same stroller and walk her all over the neighborhood...it was the only way I could get her to take a nap. Scarlett stayed awake the whole time and just looked at everything and enjoyed the wind in her hair.

Hancock and Rotten Karma

Ok, my luck is just awful lately. Tonight, Jon and I traded out so we could see a movie. This means that he stays home with Savy while I go to see a movie; then I come home and he goes to see a movie. Tonight I went to see Hancock. I got there early, so I got the good seat...the one behind the handicapped row with the bar that you can put your feet up on. There were a total of four people in the theatre when I sat down. Four more walked in after I sat down. So that's a total of 9 people (including myself) in the theatre....that's practically empty. So this woman walks in with her two teenage daughters. Where do they sit? Right behind me, of course. That in itself bugs me. Why would you sit RIGHT BEHIND ME in a practically empty theatre? Have you ever heard of personal space? I will not sit within 2 rows of another person (unless I came in with them) in a nearly empty theatre. Just ask Krista if you don't believe me...remember how we had to change seats when we went to see SATC? Not only did they sit right behind me, but one of the girls kicked my seat periodically throughout the whole movie. Yes, I could have moved, but then I would not have been able to put my feet up.

What is it with me and movie theatre karma? I looked forward to the second movie in the Lord of the Rings trilogy for a whole year. When it finally came out, the whole experience was miserable. There were two giggly, obnoxious teenage girls sitting right behind me who talked very loudly through the entire movie. There was a married couple sitting right beside me having an argument/shouting match. The woman got up and left the man sitting there. He then moved into her seat (to get further away from the annoying teenagers behind me) and took my drink with him. He took a drink before I could say anything, realized it was not his drink, and then tried to give it back to me! I finally got up in the middle of the movie and went outside to complain about the girls. I told the manager where they were sitting, then went back to my seat. The stupid manager went to the wrong side of the theatre, looked around for about 30 seconds, then left.

Back before theatres had stadium seating, the tallest person there would always sit directly in front of me. If there is anyone drunk, loud, flatulent, or just stupid in general in the building, they are bound to park themselves mere inches from me. I was nearly set on fire in a movie theatre back in 1989 when I went to see "The Burbs" with a friend. When I was very little, my parents took me to see Bambi in the local theater...something happened to the film and they were unable to show the movie (yes, Mom, I remember that!).

So, the movie ended (it was really good, btw) and I went to my car. The battery was dead.

It's a curse. And it's not the only thing I've been cursed with. Once upon a time, I stepped in gum at least once a day (usually 3 or 4 times daily) every single day for 5 days straight. There was a brief period where I got pooped on by birds for three consecutive days. And don't get me started on the condom curse (aka the huge grocery sack full of condoms that followed me across two towns)! Why do these things happen to me?

Jon is seeing Pineapple Express right now. I'll be seeing that one soon, I hope...the trailers look really funny.

Perils on the New Route

This morning I was running on my new route (see Table Dancing post for details), and, ahead of me, I saw a guy come out of his house with his dogs. At the same time that I noticed them, they saw me and started running toward me.... 4 pitbulls coming at me! My adrenaline kicked in...heart started pounding. The owner was running after them, yelling like he thought they would tear me apart. They were a good distance away when they saw me, so I had time to prepare.

Pause for a moment. When I moved to Memphis several years ago, I started hearing about pitbull attacks in the more dangerous areas of the city. Since then, every time I see a dog running toward me, it's a pitbull until proven otherwise. I'm not sure why....I'm not afraid of dogs. I guess hearing about those attacks just made me paranoid. Once, when I was making a visit to a home health patient, a pitbull ran at me from behind a shrub as I was walking to the house. I turned and ran back to my car, went back to the office, and told the supervisor it was an unsafe environment because the patient had a pitbull loose in the yard. The supervisor called the patient to investigate....turns out it was actually a poodle, not a pitbull. The supervisor laughed her a$$ off at me, as did the patient when I went back to her house to make the visit. In my defense, it surprised me jumping from behind a bush like that!

Anyway, back to this morning. I slowed to a walk and had my hand on my oc spray...the super strong law enforcement stuff Jon gave me that's better than regular pepper spray. I made myself keep walking like I wasn't afraid...you don't ever want to run away from or show fear to an aggressive dog. They got closer and closer. Just as I was about to pull out the oc spray and let 'em have it, I noticed they weren't pitbulls after all. They were either some sort of Husky Mix or Australian Shepherd....they had those weird blue eyes. They were all wagging their tails and wanted to walk with me. The owner got so mad because they stayed with me and he had to chase them down.

Scary, huh?
