Lazy Sunday

I tried to relax a little on my last day off, so we just hung around the house today. We played with the girls in Scarlett's room for a while this morning. I brought out the "magical unicorn" that Savy got on her first birthday, and Scarlett loved it.

Scarlett took a nap in her new bed for the first time today! She seemed to like it well enough, but I'm still going to keep her in the crib at night for a while longer.

Savannah disappeared later this afternoon, and I found her asleep in Scarlett's bed.

Notice I got the guardrails on today.

Here's Scarlett eating a poptart and telling Savannah to get up.

New Shoes and A New Bed!

Scarlett and I went shopping Thursday while Savannah was in school. We were in Marshall's when I spotted just what I've been looking for...Robeez sandals for Scarlett! I tried them on her, and she agreed they were fabulous. She insisted on wearing them as soon as we'd bought them, and she showed them to everyone we met at our next stop - Target.

The toddler bed is practically finished. All I have left to do is attach the guardrails to the sides. We moved it into her room so she can get used to it...I'll probably let her take her daytime naps in it just for practice.

I can't believe I actually made this. From picking out the boards, cutting them, nailing them together, painting - just me! I'll post more pics when I get the guardrails on, and I'll give info about the materials in case you guys want to make one of your own.

Scarlett had her 1 year check-up yesterday. Dr Higginbotham said she's doing great. I expressed my concerns over the fact that she still doesn't have any teeth, and he said some children wait as late as 15 months to start getting theirs. He did think he saw some teeth getting ready to come through, but if she still isn't teething at the 15 month check-up we'll see a pediatric dentist. She's still in the 75th percentile for height and weight.

The girls are still enjoying their new giant bears. Savy somehow managed to drag hers into bed the first night.

He takes up most of the bed - can you find Savannah in this pic?

Nanny and Lee Ottis came to visit today. I'm finally going to be able to finish the bed now that I have someone to keep Scarlett busy. I finished the priming today...Savannah helped.

They're spending the night with us tonight, so I'll be able to paint it before they leave tomorrow.

When Jon Goes To Costco...

...you just never know what he's going to bring home. He went on a grocery run today and came home with these giant bears - one for Savannah and one for Scarlett.

Savy claimed the dark brown one and named him Brownie. Scarlett seems to like the tan one. They wallowed on the floor with them for a long time.

I hope to have a painted and finished toddler bed to show you guys at the end of next week. Then I can start on my next project!

Back To School

Savy has been so anxious to go back to school - she was asking me every five minutes this morning, "Is it time for school yet?" She insisted on wearing her brand new Twinkle Toes Sketchers (courtesy of Mimi) for her first day.

New Hello Kitty backpack

These are the "blingiest" shoes I've ever seen...at least as far as kids' shoes go. Look at the sun reflecting off the toe! And they have multicolored flashing lights too. Savannah LOVES them.

It was too quiet around here today, but I think Scarlett enjoyed having me all to herself for a few hours. Savannah had a great day, and she got a "G" (green) for good behavior at school.

Savannah spent the weekend at Mimi's house and got home today. I missed her so much...it just isn't the same around here without her. Jon, Scarlett, and I went to East Memphis yesterday and did a little shopping. I had my first trip to Fresh Market - I think I've found supermarket heaven!

I didn't get the bed finished, but at least it's assembled and sanded. All I have to do now is prime and paint it, and I believe I'll wait a week or so until it cools off a bit. There was no blood or tears involved in the building of this toddler bed, but there was definitely plenty of sweat...it was over 100 degrees almost every day that I worked on it!

I had Scarlett model so you can get an idea of the size. It fits a standard crib mattress.

In hindsight, I'm not sure the canopy was such a great idea. I love the way it looks, but I'm afraid she might try to climb/swing on it when she's older. Although the bed itself is very, very sturdy, there really isn't a way to make the canopy strong since I had to use 1x2's. It is removeable, so if she breaks it in the future, she'll just have to do without a canopy. Plus, I've already banged my head on it a few times...

If anyone is interested, I will consider taking an order for another one - though I probably won't build another one with a canopy.

Savy started the first fall session of pool school Monday. She'll only go two days a week now. She's doing so good!

Scarlett started walking this week...anyone care to guess what motivated her? While Savannah was having her swimming lesson, Scarlett decided she was going to get in the pool too. She was standing beside me holding onto a chair, then she took off for the pool all of a sudden. It's like she didn't even realize she was walking...she just did it. I had to wrestle with her for the rest of the lesson - pool school is probably going to be a bit of a hassle now.

Savy had her first "Build-a-Bear" experience today. Lately she's been sneaking out of her room after bedtime and sleeping in our bedroom. Today I agreed to let her get a bear if she promises to stay in her room from now on. She chose a bunny...I didn't get a pic of the "stuffing" step. This is the second step - bath and brushing.

Then she picked the clothes...fluffy robe and bunny slippers.

Naming the bunny and printing the birth certificate. Her name is Hippity Hop.

Getting ready to take her home.

I'm still working on the bed. I should have already finished this project, but it's just too hot to stay outside to work on it. I'm having to just do a little at a time. I got the mattress supports finished today, and the posts for the canopy are cut.

Progress

I'm so ready for this week off! I wasn't able to get a whole lot accomplished on the bed the last few days....just got the frame done. Well, actually not even that - I've still got to do the boards for the mattress support. It would be really quick and easy if I didn't have Scarlett demanding my attention every moment.

I hope to finish it this week. All I've got left (besides the supports) is the canopy and the siderails. And then I have to fill in the gaps with wood filler. Then I have to sand it. Then paint it. Maybe I won't finish this week.....

Scarlett likes her new bed.

Yesterday I finally spent my birthday money (yes, I've been holding onto it for a while). I bought myself a sander - thank you Nanny and Lee Ottis! I worked on Scarlett's toddler bed this afternoon, and it's coming along nicely.

I've got the headboard and footboard done. Next is the bedframe and the siderails. Last, I'll do the canopy. It'll look pretty much like this...

but toddler size. That image is from Knock-Off Wood, and the plans for this bed are very easy to follow. I'm thinking I'll paint it charcoal gray...anyone have any other color suggestions?

After I bought my sander yesterday, we went to Best Buy to look at an iPad. Savy played with the demo for a while and has decided she has to have one. She spent all day scavenging for money...raiding every stash of change she could find. She came up with a little over $7. I wonder where she gets this obsession for gadgets.

Birthday Girl

Saturday was Scarlett's first birthday. We had a small party at Mimi's house...cake, ice cream, balloons, presents. Savannah and Pappi couldn't wait for the cake and ice cream. - they were the first to the table.

Savy picked out the Care Bears cake a few weeks ago.

Here's Scarlett about to get her first taste of birthday cake...

Then she dug right in.

Savannah helped Scarlett open her gifts...and play with them.

Savy also got a few gifts so she wouldn't be jealous. Here's Mimi reading one of her new books to her.

Now that Scarlett's one, she can face forward in the car. We installed the new carseat today...she seems to like it.

I'm so excited about getting to start a new project! We went to Lowe's this morning to get wood, and Jon kept the girls entertained while I did all the cutting this afternoon.

Look familiar? I'm making the farmhouse toddler bed (plans from Knock Off Wood) for Scarlett. No, she's not ready for a toddler bed yet, but I want to have it ready when she is. Plus, making stuff is just therapeutic for me. I was only able to get the pieces cut today (too hot!) and lay them together to make sure everything's the right length. But that's the hardest part. Now all I've got to do is put it together, sand, and paint it. I'm also making a four-poster type canopy for the bed. It's going to be gorgeous (I hope) - can't wait to show you the finished product!
